 Pregnancy week by week

Pregnancy is an incredible journey that spans approximately 40 weeks, divided into three trimesters. Here is a general overview of pregnancy week by week:

First Trimester (Weeks 1-12):

  • Week 1: The pregnancy begins with the first day of the last menstrual period. Conception typically occurs around week 2.
  • Weeks 4-5: The embryo implants in the uterus. Early signs of pregnancy, such as missed period, fatigue, and breast tenderness, may appear.
  • Week 8: The embryo is now called a fetus. Organs, limbs, and facial features begin to form.
  • Week 12: The first trimester ends. The fetus has developed all major organs and starts looking like a tiny baby.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13-27):

  • Week 13: The fetus is around three inches long. Movements can be felt by the mother.
  • Week 16: The sex of the baby can often be determined through an ultrasound. The fetus develops a growth spurt.
  • Week 20: The halfway point of pregnancy. The fetus becomes more active, and the mother may feel stronger kicks.
  • Week 24: The fetus has a chance of survival outside the womb with medical assistance.
  • Week 27: The third trimester is on the horizon. The fetus’s lungs continue to mature.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40+):

  • Week 28: The final trimester begins. The fetus’s eyes open, and it develops sleep and wake cycles.
  • Week 32: The fetus gains more weight, and its movements may feel more restricted.
  • Week 36: The fetus is considered full-term, with organs prepared for life outside the womb.
  • Week 40+: The due date has arrived, but it’s common for the baby to be born in the two weeks before or after the estimated date.

Keep in mind that these are general milestones, and each pregnancy may vary. Regular prenatal care with healthcare professionals is crucial for monitoring the baby’s growth and the mother’s well-being throughout each week of pregnancy.
